The Strand Gallery is proud to present Creatures in Colour: Sketchbooks from Faris Badwan, a retrospective collection of the artist’s intricate, dreamlike ink drawings, alongside new works in watercolours. Frontman of The Horrors and former student at the St. Martins College of Art, Faris Badwan has documented his entire life through drawing. His unique artwork has adorned the album sleeves of The Horrors, and The Cats’s eyes.

While others have compared his style to a visual “stream of consciousness”, Faris has identified the accidental and the obsessive in his work; “hypnotic” states of concentration mixed with the smudge and slip of a pen.

Alongside pages from Faris’ sketchbooks, The Strand Gallery will also exhibit a selection of new pieces in watercolour and acrylic. These Creatures In Colour show a new side to Faris’ creative technique.

With exclusive access to private sketchbooks and extensive archives, The Strand Gallery is honoured to present original sketchbook pages, reworkings on large scale and unseen watercolours from Faris Badwan. Creatures In Colour reveals a further dimension of Faris Badwan’s artistic prowes

Faris: “Creatures in Colour” will be compiled from sketchbooks I’ve been keeping over the past couple of years. My sketchbooks have always been fairly voyeuristic in that many of the drawings spring from watching people or interpreting conversations. The books end up as visual diaries; shreds of sentences or characters and their personality traits appear on different pages and then continue to develop and mutate. Over the last 12 months I began experimenting with colour which gradually changed the way I saw everything.”

Biography

Faris Badwan is an English musician and artist. He was born in Sidcup, Kent, to a Palestinian father and English mother and grew up in Warwickshire along with his three brothers. After obtaining a scholarship to Rugby School, he continued his education at Central Saints Martins College of Art and Design in London. Faris followed courses in illustrating but eventually deferred his studies to concentrate on his musical career. Despite his success as a musician, Faris continued with his original passion – drawing and painting – and has developed a large portfolio of work. His sketches have been exhibited at The Bodhi, London Brick Lane and The Book Club, Shoreditch, London in 2007 and 2010. http:www.farisbadwan.com
